Overview

The Fourteen Unwholesome Mental Factors (Akusala Cetasikā) are the complete psychological toxins of the Theravāda system. They arise exclusively within the 12 unwholesome consciousnesses, rendering the mind morally blameworthy and generating painful future kammic ripening (vipāka). The first four are universal across all unwholesome states, while the others arise contextually based on greed or aversion.

  2. Ahirika - Shamelessness: The lack of moral conscience or internal recoil from committing evil deeds.
  3. Anottappa - Moral Dreadlessness: The complete disregard for the bad consequences or external blame of wrongdoing.
  4. Uddhacca - Restlessness: The inner agitation or flutter of the mind that prevents it from settling calmly on an object.

The 3 Greed-Group Factors (Lobha-tri):

  1. Lobha - Greed / Attachment: The basic pulling force that clings to sensory objects or existence.
  2. Diṭṭhi - Wrong View: Holding dogmatic, un-orthodox, or mistaken views regarding kamma, self, or liberation.
  3. Māna - Conceit: The psychological habit of self-inflation and measuring oneself against others.

The 4 Hate-Group Factors (Dosa-catukka):

  1. Dosa - Hatred / Aversion: The destructive force of anger, rage, and irritation.
  2. Issā - Envy / Jealousy: Resenting the success, beauty, or wealth of others.
  3. Macchariya - Stinginess: The intense, contracting meanness that refuses to share gains or knowledge.
  4. Kukkucca - Remorse / Worry: Lingering anxiety and regret over good deeds left undone or bad deeds committed.

The 3 Bound and Wavering Factors:

  1. Thīna - Sloth: Sluggishness and lack of adaptability within the mind itself.
  2. Middha - Torpor: Morbid heavy drowsiness within the associated mental factors, causing sleepiness.
  3. Vicikicchā - Doubt: Skeptical, paralyzing indecision regarding the Buddha, Dhamma, and Saṅgha.
