Grammatical Analysis
Nissayapaccaya: [m.] Support condition. Formed by nissaya (support, foundation, reliance) + paccaya (condition).
Orthodox Definition
Nissaya-paccaya is the eighth of the 24 Conditions. It refers to a phenomenon that acts as a physical or structural foundation upon which other phenomena depend in order to arise or exist.
The most common manifestation of this condition is physical matter supporting consciousness. For example, eye-consciousness cannot arise out of nowhere; it absolutely relies on the physical eye-base (cakkhāyatana) as its foundation. Therefore, the eye acts as a Nissaya-paccaya for the seeing consciousness.
The commentaries use the simile of the earth supporting trees, or a canvas supporting a painting. Just as the tree cannot grow without the earth beneath it, cognitive processes cannot operate without the physical sense bases providing a firm structural support.
