Grammatical Analysis
Nettippakaraṇa: [nt.] The Book of Guidance; The Treatise on the Guide. Formed by netti (guide, conductor, that which leads) + pakaraṇa (treatise, literary work).
Orthodox Definition
The Nettippakaraṇa (often just called The Netti) is an extraordinary exegetical manual. While not universally accepted as part of the canonical Khuddaka Nikāya in all Theravāda countries (it is canonical in Myanmar, but considered para-canonical in Sri Lanka), its authority is absolute.
Orthodox tradition attributes the text to Venerable Mahākaccāna, a direct disciple of the Buddha famous for elaborating on brief teachings. The Netti is essentially a hermeneutical rulebook. It does not teach new doctrines; rather, it teaches monks how to interpret the Suttas. It provides a highly structured methodology—using specific “phrasings” (byañjana) and “meanings” (attha)—to extract the ultimate Abhidhammic reality out of conventional Sutta poetry without distorting the Buddha’s intent.
Buddhaghosa relied heavily on the methodology of the Netti when composing his own commentaries centuries later.
Quote
Dvādasa padāni suttaṃ, taṃ sabbaṃ byañjanañca attho ca;
The Sutta, which consists of twelve terms, is entirely both expression and meaning;Taṃ viññeyyaṃ ubhayaṃ, ko attho byañjanaṃ katamaṃ.
Both should be understood: what is meaning, and what is expression?Soḷasahārā netti, pañcanayā sāsanassa pariyeṭṭhi;
The Netti, with its sixteen Hāras, and the five Nayas, is the investigation of the Teaching;Aṭṭhārasamūlapadā, mahākaccānena niddiṭṭhā.
The eighteen Root Terms were expounded by Mahākaccāna.Hārā byañjanavicayo, suttassa nayā tayo ca suttattho;
The Hāras are the analysis of expression, and the three Nayas are the meaning of the Sutta;Ubhayaṃ pariggahītaṃ, vuccati suttaṃ yathāsuttaṃ.
Both are comprehended; the Sutta is explained according to the Sutta.Yā ceva desanā yañca, desitaṃ ubhayameva viññeyyaṃ;
Both the teaching itself and what has been taught should be understood;Tatrāyamānupubbī, navavidhasuttantapariyeṭṭhīti.
Herein, this sequence is the ninefold investigation of the Suttanta.— Nettippakaraṇapāḷi
