Nettippakaraṇa: [nt.] The Book of Guidance; The Treatise on the Guide. Formed by netti (guide, conductor, that which leads) + pakaraṇa (treatise, literary work).
Orthodox Definition
The Nettippakaraṇa (often just called The Netti) is an extraordinary exegetical manual. While not universally accepted as part of the canonical Khuddaka Nikāya in all Theravāda countries (it is canonical in Myanmar, but considered para-canonical in Sri Lanka), its authority is absolute.
Orthodox tradition attributes the text to Venerable Mahākaccāna, a direct disciple of the Buddha famous for elaborating on brief teachings. The Netti is essentially a hermeneutical rulebook. It does not teach new doctrines; rather, it teaches monks how to interpret the Suttas. It provides a highly structured methodology—using specific “phrasings” (byañjana) and “meanings” (attha)—to extract the ultimate Abhidhammic reality out of conventional Sutta poetry without distorting the Buddha’s intent.
Buddhaghosa relied heavily on the methodology of the Netti when composing his own commentaries centuries later.
