Orthodox Definition

Avigata-paccaya is the twenty-fourth and final condition of the Paṭṭhāna. Functionally and structurally, the phenomena constituting the Non-disappearance condition are absolutely identical to those of the Presence condition (Atthi-paccaya). They render assistance strictly by means of their non-departed state (avigatabhāva).

The commentary explicitly addresses why this identical causal mechanism is presented under a new name at the end of the conditional matrix. It explains that this repetition—forming a pairing or dyad (duka) of Presence and Non-disappearance—is employed either to showcase the stylistic elegance of the Buddha’s teaching (desanāvilāsa), or to specifically accommodate the varied cognitive dispositions of trainees who need to be guided in this exact manner (vinetabbaveneyyavasena). This pedagogical reiteration is compared to the Buddha teaching the hetusampayutta (associated with root) dyad even after having already taught the conceptually similar sahetuka (possessing a root) dyad.

atthipaccayadhammā eva avigatabhāvena upakārakattā avigatapaccayoti veditabbā.
It should be understood that the very dhammas of the Presence Condition, by being helpful due to their non-departed state, are the Avigata-paccayo (Non-disappearance Condition).

desanāvilāsena pana tathā vinetabbaveneyyavasena vā ayaṃ duko vutto; sahetukadukaṃ vatvāpi hetusampayuttaduko viyāti.
Moreover, this dyad was taught due to the elegance of the discourse, or according to the disposition of those to be trained, just as the hetusampayutta dyad was taught even after stating the sahetuka dyad.
