Grammatical Analysis

Vīmaṃsā: [f.] investigation; ingenuity; analysis; critical examination. Derived from root mān (to think, consider, weigh).

Orthodox Definition

Vīmaṃsā is the Fourth Base of Spiritual Power (Iddhipāda). Doctrinally, it is absolutely identical to the faculty of wisdom (paññā) and the enlightenment factor of investigation (dhammavicaya).

When operating as a base of power, vīmaṃsā represents the supreme ingenuity and analytical sharpness of the meditator. If a practitioner is struggling to calm the mind or penetrate a concept, they do not rely on sheer willpower or brute-force energy; instead, they use vīmaṃsā to critically dissect the problem, adjust their meditation object, outsmart their own defilements, and engineer a breakthrough.

The commentaries note that a practitioner driven by vīmaṃsā achieves success through deep reflection on the causes and conditions of phenomena. It is the power of supreme problem-solving applied to liberation.
