Grammatical Analysis
Upacaya: [m.] Integration; accumulation; initial arising. From prefix upa (towards) + root ci (to heap up, pile, build).
Orthodox Definition
In the highly technical taxonomy of Abhidhamma, Upacaya is the first of the four “characteristic material phenomena” (lakkhaṇa-rūpa). It describes the microscopic physics of matter.
Upacaya refers specifically to the initial generation and building up of material form (rūpa). For example, at the exact moment of conception, the very first arising of the physical faculties (eye, ear, heart-base) before they reach their full development is termed rūpassa upacayo (the integration of matter). It is the biological and karmic surging forward of physical phenomena.
The commentaries distinguish Upacaya (the initial springing up of water from a spring) from Santati (the continuous flow of that water into a river).
