Grammatical Analysis

Sāmaṇerī: [f.] Novice nun. The feminine form of sāmaṇera.

Orthodox Definition

A Sāmaṇerī is a female monastic who has gone forth from the household life but has not yet taken higher ordination. Like her male counterpart, she shaves her head, wears the monastic robes, and is bound by the exact same Ten Precepts (Dasa Sikkhāpada).

In the structural path to becoming a fully ordained Bhikkhunī, the Sāmaṇerī stage is the foundational step. Before a sāmaṇerī can receive higher ordination (upasampadā), she must transition into the status of a Sikkhāmānā (probationary nun) for exactly two years to thoroughly test her resolve and physical suitability for the ascetic life.
