Grammatical Analysis
Paṭisandhi: [f.] rebirth-linking; reunion; conception. Formed by prefix paṭi (back, towards, again) + sandhi (joining, connection, linking). Literally means “the linking back together” of existence.
Orthodox Definition
In the microscopic architecture of Abhidhamma cognitive physics, Paṭisandhi specifically designates the Rebirthlinking Consciousness (paṭisandhi-citta). It is the very first single mind-moment of a new lifetime.
The orthodox tradition is explicitly clear: no soul, entity, or consciousness “travels” or “flies” from the old body to the new womb. Instead, the final dying thought (cuti-citta) of the previous life acts as the direct proximate condition (anantara-paccaya) that sparks the arising of the paṭisandhi-citta in the new location. They are completely distinct moments of consciousness, yet bound by an unbroken causal continuum.
The paṭisandhi-citta is a resultant consciousness (vipāka-citta). Its ethical quality (and therefore the destination of the rebirth) is entirely determined by whichever heavy kamma or near-death kamma presented itself to the mind right before the previous death.
Quote
Tadevaṃ pavattamānaṃ taṇhāvijjānaṃ appahīnattā avijjāpaṭicchāditādīnave tasmiṃ visaye taṇhā nāmeti, sahajātasaṅkhārā khipanti.
This consciousness, proceeding in this manner, because of the non-abandonment of craving and ignorance, craving inclines it towards that object (which is the place of arising for the paṭisandhi-consciousness’ object, namely kamma, kamma-sign, or destination-sign) whose danger is obscured by ignorance, and the co-nascent saṅkhāras (volitions of the javana consciousness near cuti, or contact and other saṅkhāras co-nascent with the javana consciousness near cuti) thrust it onto that object (which is the support of the paṭisandhi-consciousness, namely kamma, etc.).Taṃ santativasena taṇhāya nāmiyamānaṃ saṅkhārehi khippamānaṃ orimatīrarukkhavinibaddharajjumālambitvā mātikātikkamako viya purimañca nissayaṃ jahati, aparañca kammasamuṭṭhāpitaṃ nissayaṃ assādayamānaṃ vā anassādayamānaṃ vā ārammaṇādīhiyeva paccayehi pavattatīti.
That consciousness, being inclined by craving and thrust forth by saṅkhāras in a continuous stream, like a man leaping across a ditch by holding onto a rope tied to a tree on the near bank, abandons its former support, and proceeds by means of conditions such as object and so forth, whether experiencing or not experiencing the subsequent support produced by kamma.Ettha ca purimaṃ cavanato cuti.
And here, the former (consciousness) is called cuti due to its falling away from the manifest existence.Pacchimaṃ bhavantarādipaṭisandhānato paṭisandhīti vuccati.
The latter (consciousness) is called paṭisandhi due to its linking to a new existence as its beginning.Tadetaṃ nāpi purimabhavā idhāgataṃ, nāpi tato kammasaṅkhāranativisayādihetuṃ vinā pātubhūtanti veditabbaṃ.
And it should be understood that this consciousness neither comes from the former existence to this present one, nor does it manifest here without causes such as kamma, saṅkhāra, inclination, or object from that former existence.— Visuddhimagga (du)
