Grammatical Analysis
Paṭisandhi: [f.] rebirth-linking; reunion; conception. Formed by prefix paṭi (back, towards, again) + sandhi (joining, connection, linking). Literally means “the linking back together” of existence.
Orthodox Definition
In the microscopic architecture of Abhidhamma cognitive physics, Paṭisandhi specifically designates the Rebirth-linking Consciousness (paṭisandhi-citta). It is the very first single mind-moment of a new lifetime.
The orthodox tradition is explicitly clear: no soul, entity, or consciousness “travels” or “flies” from the old body to the new womb. Instead, the final dying thought (cuti-citta) of the previous life acts as the direct proximate condition (anantara-paccaya) that sparks the arising of the paṭisandhi-citta in the new location. They are completely distinct moments of consciousness, yet bound by an unbroken causal continuum.
The paṭisandhi-citta is a resultant consciousness (vipāka-citta). Its ethical quality (and therefore the destination of the rebirth) is entirely determined by whichever heavy kamma or near-death kamma presented itself to the mind right before the previous death.
