Grammatical Analysis

Appamaññā: [f.] Illimitables; Boundless states; Immeasurables. Formed by negative prefix a (not) + pamāṇa (measure, limit) + ya (abstract suffix).

Orthodox Definition

Appamaññā is the Abhidhammic and structural synonym for the Four Brahmavihāras (Divine Abodes): Loving-kindness (mettā), Compassion (karuṇā), Sympathetic Joy (muditā), and Equanimity (upekkhā).

These states are called “Illimitable” because, when properly developed in meditation, they must be extended to all living beings across the universe without any bias, boundary, or discrimination. If a meditator extends love to their family but feels anger toward an enemy, the state is limited, not appamaññā.

The commentaries state that to achieve absorption (jhāna) using these subjects, the mind must literally break down the barriers (sīmāsambheda) between self, friend, neutral person, and enemy, until the mind radiates an infinite, boundless field of pure goodwill.

Now, in the Appamaññāvibhaṅga, which follows immediately after that, “catasso” is a numerical determination.

appamaññāyoti pharaṇaappamāṇavasena appamaññāyo.
“Appamaññāyo” refers to the illimitables by way of boundless pervasion.

etā hi ārammaṇavasena appamāṇe vā satte pharanti, ekasattampi vā anavasesapharaṇavasena pharantīti pharaṇaappamāṇavasena appamaññāyoti vuccanti.
These illimitables, indeed, pervade beings who are boundless as objects, or they pervade even a single being without remainder by way of pervasion; thus, they are called appamaññā by way of boundless pervasion.
