Grammatical Analysis
Sammādiṭṭhi: [f.] Right View; Right Understanding; Correct Vision. Formed by sammā (properly, correctly, perfectly) + diṭṭhi (view, belief, perspective). From root dis (to see). Meaning: seeing reality exactly as it is without distortion.
Orthodox Definition
Sammādiṭṭhi is the first limb of the Noble Eightfold Path and the absolute captain of the wisdom division (paññā-sikkhā). The Buddha declared it to be the forerunner (pubbaṅgamā) of the entire path because correct action and concentration cannot unfold without correct initial orientation.
The Mahāvihāra commentary separates Right View into two operational layers:
- Lokiya-sammādiṭṭhi (Mundane Right View): The unshakeable understanding of the law of kamma (kammassakatā-diṭṭhi), affirming that actions have moral weight, that rebirth exists, and that wholesome/unwholesome choices yield corresponding results.
- Lokuttara-sammādiṭṭhi (Supramundane Right View): The direct, penetrative wisdom (paññā) that flashes within a single path-moment (magga-citta), registering Nibbāna and perfectly penetrating the Four Noble Truths.
It functions to shatter the structural delusions of permanence (nicca-saññā), pleasure (sukha-saññā), and identity (attā-saññā).
