Grammatical Analysis

Peṭakopadesa: [m.] Instructions on the Piṭakas; Disclosure of the Baskets. Formed by peṭaka (basket, referring to the Tipiṭaka) + upadesa (instruction, advice, teaching).

Orthodox Definition

Like the Netti, the Peṭakopadesa is an ancient, highly technical manual of textual interpretation attributed to Venerable Mahākaccāna. It is recognized as canonical in the Burmese tradition but para-canonical elsewhere.

It is closely related to the Netti in structure and purpose, providing an intricate system of logical rules, categories, and analytical phrasing to help scholars correctly interpret the Buddha’s discourses. It serves as a safeguard against misinterpreting metaphors or taking conventional phrasing as ultimate truth. While the Netti is more polished and widely studied, the Peṭakopadesa is considered by modern scholars to be older, representing the earliest attempts of the Theravāda Saṅgha to formalize a unified system of exegesis.
