Grammatical Analysis
Maggapaccaya: [m.] Path condition. Formed by magga (path, way, road) + paccaya (condition).
Orthodox Definition
Magga-paccaya is the eighteenth of the 24 Conditions. Similar to the Jhāna condition, the Path condition in Abhidhamma applies to both wholesome and unwholesome states. It refers to the power of specific mental factors to act as a vehicle, transporting the mind toward a definitive destination (either liberation or the lower realms).
There are twelve Path factors: eight wholesome (Right View, Right Effort, etc.) and four unwholesome (Wrong View, Wrong Effort, Wrong Mindfulness, Wrong Concentration).
When these factors arise, they do not just concentrate the mind; they establish an irreversible trajectory. Wrong View acts as a Path condition driving the mind straight to the hell realms. Right View acts as a Path condition driving the mind toward Nibbāna.
The texts explain that these twelve path factors operate fundamentally by way of leading out, deliverance, or escape (niyyānaṭṭha). This structural guidance functions in two distinct directions: either rendering assistance by delivering a being out from good destinies through the accumulation of merit, or leading them away from bad destinies through the mechanism of demerit. In either capacity, these factors condition their associated mental phenomena as well as any concomitantly arisen material phenomena produced by that mental state.

Sammādiṭṭhi and other dhammas that assist in deliverance from good destinies through merit, or from bad destinies through demerit, are Maggapaccayo (the Path Condition).

The twelve path factors, categorised as wholesome, etc., that render assistance by way of leading out from any state are the path condition (magga-paccaya).yathāha – ‘‘maggaṅgāni maggasampayuttakānaṃ dhammānaṃ taṃsamuṭṭhānānañca rūpānaṃ maggapaccayena paccayo’’ti (paṭṭhā. 1.1.18).
As it is said: “The path factors are conditions for their associated phenomena and their concomitantly arisen rūpa by way of the path condition,” (Paṭṭhāna 1.1.18).
