Grammatical Analysis

Dhammavicaya: [m.] investigation of phenomena; discernment of reality. Formed by dhamma (ultimate realities/phenomena) + vicaya (investigation, research, analytical scrutiny).

Orthodox Definition

Dhammavicaya is the second factor of enlightenment (dhammavicaya-sambojjhaṅga). Doctrinally, it is completely identical to the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya) and the unmooring root of non-delusion (amoha-cetasika). It represents the active, sharp, investigative component of insight meditation.

The commentaries emphasize that dhammavicaya does not mean intellectualizing, speculative theorizing, or philosophical daydreaming about suttas. Rather, it is the direct, real-time microscopic dissection of currently arising mental and physical states (nāma-rūpa) to track their conditional origins and verify their intrinsic characteristics of impermanence, suffering, and non-self.

The Sammohavinodanī outlines seven practical requirements to mature this factor, including clean physical conditions, balancing the spiritual faculties, avoiding unwise individuals, and continuously reflecting on ultimate frameworks like the aggregates and sense bases.
